2014, 40′ – for string quartet, bass clarinet, horn, and organ
“Favorite Gestures, Repeated with Layers” consists of four parts. “(Untitled)” is a short study of two melodies, performed by the entire ensemble. “Untitled I”, “Untitled II”, and “Untitled III” all consist of the same structure: first, the organ plays alone; then the same material is arranged for organ and string quartet; then the organ plays the same material alone again; then the same material is arranged for organ, string quartet, and winds. Each part constantly articulates the same gesture, with small variations revealing themselves from iteration to iteration. The organ is tuned to a quarter-comma meantone temperament, while the other instruments approximate the same tuning in varying degrees of precision.
“Favorite Gestures, Repeated with Layers” was performed on April 10, 2014 by Gregory Gennaro and Thomas Cooper, violin; Seido Karasaki, viola; Iva Casián Lakoš, cello; Giovanni Bertoni bass clarinet; Bailey Myers, horn; and Cariad Zinky, organ.
